Manley Webb (1912-2007)

Brownwood Bulletin
March 23, 2007

Manley Webb, 94, of Brownwood, passed away March 20, 2007, at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

Manley was born Sept. 13, 1912, in Weinert, Texas, to Charles and Alma Webb.   He was a longtime resident of Brownwood, where he owned and operated Davis Floral Company for many years before handing the reins over to his son, James.   He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church where he served as deacon.

Manley also served on the Brownwood City Council, the Central Texas Council of Government, City and Rural Rides, board of the American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of American (where he was scoutmaster for many years), president of the Mid-West Texas Florist Association.  He was a lifetime member of the Texas State Florist Association.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, James and Rita Webb of Brownwood, and his two granddaughters, Christina and Stephanie Webb.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Estelle.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2007, in the Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Don Scroggs officiating.  Interment will follow in Greenleaf Cemetery.   The family will receive friends from
6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Levi Webb and his wife, Eliza Jane Barkley, lived in Clay County, Alabama, where they were parents to a nice family of  6 children: Annie, John, William, Robert, Charles and Leila.   When Leila was only 4 years old, her mother died.   Then her father died 5 years later.   This was about 1882.

The children stayed together and eventually came to Texas after their uncle, John Barkley, sent for them.  They lived in Jones County before moving to Weinert in Haskell County. His wife, known as "Aunt Mary" is pictured below with the family photos.

Annie who cared for the children when they were orphaned, did not marry.   Leila married Hugh Read in 1904 and lived in Weinert where their daughter, Gladys, was born in 1906.   Later Hugh and Leila were blessed with the addition of Ora Mae, Ira and Eva.

Charles Calvin Webb also lived in Weinert for several years before moving to Brownwood where he and his wife, Alma, raised their son, Manley.   John, William and Robert lived in Haskell and Jones Counties, with their wives, May, Ann, and Rosaline.

The family genealogy is still being completed as research is ongoing.
